One of my various dreams is to retire in an integrated farm with sufficient income to sustain the amenities for a good living. Throughout my life I worked for someone and this farm is something I conceptualised as working for myself instead and not be dependent on anyone else.

Mushroom cultivation is not a big money earner but a well-managed Farm can provide a sustainable cash flow to cover farm overheard. See Project Paper for a small farm.
With a piece of land of about 5 acres we can keep some Short Hair Sheep. Hey will multiply at a steady rate but it will take at least 3 years before they start providing a steady income. The key success when you deal with Sheep is its prolificacy. I will welcome the services of Artificial Insemination experts to inseminate our Local sheep with the prolific Romanoff or Finn Sheep without actually investing in a Ram thus making Sheep farming more viable. Of course with land one can also keep a few chicken for their eggs and meat. Maybe a few pigs, some fruit and vegetables for daily consumption.
Alas, what one now needs is an easily accessible piece of land and people of like minds. We would want the integrated farm to be vibrant with people of all walks of life in a commune-like setting.

I have been involved in the Insurance business since March 1993, when I was posted to Sime Axa, learning the business from scratch. I drew on my experiences during my audit days and the fact that Sime Axa Assurance Berhad, a composite Insurer, was undergoing a complete system change and I happened to be around when the vacancy of Project Manager fell into my lap, two to three months after I joined the Company.
I was the de facto Project Manager of the Computerisation Program from that day till Sime Axa was sold to MNI Insurance in 2000. We covered both General Insurance and Life Insurance.
Being the Project Manager does not make one an expert on the various products being offered by the various insurance companies but it was the beginning of my involvement in Insurance. I sat and passed the Insurance Examinations for Insurance Agents in 2000 for both Genera and Life Insurance.

Preamble

What qualifies me as a person who can provide Computer solutions? I believe it is the journey I went throughout the years as I changed jobs and met new accounting challenges
I started my career in Sime Darby in 1979 maintaining the books of the retirement Plans and doing financial consolidations. It was a time when things were done manually. There were no Personal Computers like today, no spreadsheet programmed. It was a very painful exercise maintaining the records of each participant of the various Retirement Plan we kept. The killer was to calculate Interest on the monthly collections quarterly. It was painfully repetitive. So the first exposure in computing was to computerize the Retirement Plans. Our programmers used Cobol. We did not have a Computer then so we borrowed some space from a sister Company, Sime East West.

We did not succeed in making any great advances in our manual consolidation process but what we did do was set up a Team to study the consolidation for improvements.
I moved on to Sime Crest, a design engineering Company. As man-hour costing and timesheets were the core feature of the business it wasn’t long before we got this part computerized. Again, our programmers got this done in Cobol.

During my short stint at Tractors, we implemented the Motor Computer System patterned on the Caterpillar Dealership System. The exposure here was in Inventory management.
The next phase of change came about when I was posted to Sime Sembawang. I brought along with me, the General Ledger and the Time Sheet System. As a fabrication Company the need for material control was essential and what was developed at Sime Darby was the Material Control System.

My next experience was at Sime Axa Assurance Berhad. (See my story on Insurance in the Insurance Section). After Sime Axa, I was posted to Sime UEP. Sime UEP had a computer System but it had not kept up with the advancement in computer technology. Sime Darby’s Computer Head recommended a system change and this system was the forerunner of the Microsoft AX ERP System.
I set up the Microsoft AX System for the Bakun Project while with Sime Engineering Services after moving on from Sime UEP.
I left Sime in 2016, got a job at PT Gunnausa in Indonesia. Our Company Axtra Synergy Sdn Bhd implemented the Microsoft AX System there. As Procurement was the key process. I assumed the role of Procurement Director during the period of Project Implementation and got the full commitment of the Department for the System change.
In late 2011 I left Gunanusa for TH Heavy which was at the stage of finalizing the Microsoft AX System there. Again I took over the Procurement role to maintain discipline. At TH Heavy my focus was on developing the Procurement Monitoring System and the Production System.

Impiana Varia, as its name implies, is a Company of various dreams.
It is the alto ego of John George Ritchie, a Chartered Accountant.
Ritchie was a career employee with Sime Darby from 1979 moving up the ranks to serve in many capacities in the Group:

– As Financial Controller/Company Secretary/Investment Manager of Sime AXA Assurance,
– As Finance Director of Sime UEP,
– As Finance Director/Chief Financial Officer of Sime Engineering Services,

before leaving the Group in 2005 to join PT Gunanusa Fabricators Utama (Indonesia) as Finance Director from 2006 to 2011 and at TH Heavy Engineering Sdn Bhd as Chief Financial Officer from 2011 to 2013.

Thereafter, Impiana Varia Sdn Bhd was formed as a platform for Ritchie to continue providing his services to the community in Insurance, Computer Solutions & Accounting.

Impiana’s dream is to be a self-sustaining company that can draw together Ritchie’s experiences, and also of that of his contacts and friends, and to provide these services to those in need. The dream includes developing an integrated farm and replicating this to communities in need.
